The Lilium guide

Parking and the ZTL near Porta Pia

Arriving by car? Here's how to handle the ZTL, luggage and parking

Arriving in Rome by car and worried about the ZTL? Breathe. The hotel is at Via Venti Settembre 58/A, right by Porta Pia: with a little care you reach the door, unload the suitcases and leave the car in a garage for the whole stay. Here's how to do it, without fines and without anxiety.

Is the hotel inside or outside the ZTL?

The Lilium, at Porta Pia, is outside the ZTL Centro Storico. The one thing to watch: Via XX Settembre touches the ZTL at the far end, towards Piazza della Repubblica — so if your sat-nav brings you in from the centre you might cross a gate. Arriving from the Porta Pia side or from Via Nomentana, however, you meet no gates. When in doubt, check the up-to-date route on Roma Servizi per la Mobilità and contact the hotel, which will point you to the right way up to the door and help you with the permit to drop off your luggage.

Hours and gates

How Rome's ZTL works

Rome's ZTL isn't a single zone, but a set of areas with different hours, watched over by electronic gates with cameras. The most relevant for those staying in the centre are the ZTL Centro Storico and the ZTL Tridente — the latter the strictest, in the pedestrian heart between Piazza di Spagna and the Corso.

Broadly speaking, the ZTL Centro Storico is active Monday to Friday from 6:30 to 18:00 and on Saturday from 14:00 to 18:00, with a night band on Friday and Saturday from 23:00 to 3:00. The ZTL Tridente is active Monday to Friday from 6:30 to 19:00 and on Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00. On public holidays, as a rule, access is free, and in August the ZTL is usually suspended.

Be careful, though: hours and boundaries change, are suspended in certain periods and have been revised recently. Don't trust your memory or old maps: always check the up-to-date information on the Roma Servizi per la Mobilità website in the days around your arrival. It's the only source that counts.

The Lilium's location

Porta Pia, outside the ZTL

And here we come to the point you care about most. The Lilium is at Via Venti Settembre 58/A, at the end of the street that opens right onto Porta Pia: a border zone between the historic centre and the Salario and Castro Pretorio districts, more open to traffic than Rome's pedestrian heart. The good news is that the hotel, at Porta Pia, is outside the ZTL Centro Storico.

Here's the one thing to watch. Via XX Settembre touches the ZTL at the far end, towards Piazza San Bernardo and Piazza della Repubblica, where the gate is: the zone's north-eastern perimeter reaches Via Nazionale and Via Bissolati, not as far as Porta Pia. So if your sat-nav brings you in from the centre you might cross a gate — every unauthorised passage is a fine. Arriving from the Porta Pia side or from Via Nomentana, however, you meet no gates.

When in doubt, the safe-haven advice always holds: write or call us before you set off. We'll tell you which side to arrive from, which route avoids the gates you're not allowed through, and how to handle the brief stop below the hotel. We know our street better than any map.

Loading and unloading

Dropping off your luggage at the hotel

The good news is that stopping for a few minutes to unload the suitcases in front of the hotel is almost always manageable — even where there's the ZTL, there's generally the option of a brief loading-and-unloading stop, or of a temporary access permit for the guest of an accommodation business.

The procedure does need preparing, though. From 2026, ZTL access requests are submitted online or by appointment, so move ahead of time: send us your plate, date and time of arrival, and we'll guide you step by step. Where needed, we'll help you register the vehicle for the brief stop in front of the door.

If you'd rather avoid the whole question, there's the easier way: our transfer and chauffeur (NCC) service. A driver picks you up at the airport or station, handles the gates, and drops you in front of the hotel — you never touch the wheel and don't risk so much as a fine.

Garages and parking in the area

Where to leave the car

Our advice is clear: once the luggage is unloaded, take the car to a covered garage and leave it there for the whole stay. Around Porta Pia, towards Castro Pretorio and the Salario-Policlinico quadrant, there are several paid facilities. Here are the most convenient options.

Type Where Indicative cost
Covered, attended garage Viale Castro Pretorio (Termini / National Library area) — a few minutes' walk from the hotel around 25–45 € / day
Covered, attended garage Via del Castro Pretorio (near Termini Station) around 25–45 € / day
Covered car park Salario / Policlinico quadrant (towards the Galleria Borghese) around 20–30 € / day
On-street, blue-line parking Paid bays on the streets around Porta Pia (outside the active ZTL) hourly, municipal rate

Costs are indicative only and vary by time band, season and individual facility. Many garages let you book your space online in advance, often at a better price. Just ask us: we'll point you to the nearest garage with the best value for money for your dates.

Bus in Rome — getting around the centre by public transport instead of by car

The insider tip

Leave the car, live Rome on foot

As Romans we'll give you the most honest advice: in the centre, the car is a burden. Between the ZTL, one-way streets, traffic and impossible-to-find parking, driving inside Rome turns into hard work what should be a holiday. And from the Lilium's location you simply don't need it.

Porta Pia is just outside the hotel door. Piazza della Repubblica and Termini station are a short walk away, and everything sets off from there: metro, trains, buses to every corner of the city. Numerous bus lines run along Via XX Settembre, and on foot you reach the historic centre in about twenty minutes, on the flat.

Keep the car in the garage and use it only when it makes sense: a trip to the Castelli, a day out of Rome. For the city, trust your feet and public transport. You'll live Rome the way Romans live it — and that's something else entirely.
