The Lilium guide

Rome, just outside the door

Tips from those who live Porta Pia every day

We're a few steps from Porta Pia, in the heart of a neighbourhood Romans actually live in. Here's what we recommend — not the usual tourist guides, but the places worth seeking out.

Vista dalla finestra del Lilium Boutique Hotel — Porta Pia e il quartiere Nomentano, Roma

50 metres from the hotel

The neighbourhood: Porta Pia and the Nomentano

Via Venti Settembre is one of the historic arteries of Umbertine Rome — Liberty buildings, cafés with tables on the pavement, neighbourhood shops. Porta Pia, designed by Michelangelo and the stage of the 1870 breach that unified Rome with Italy, is literally outside the door.

A ten-minute walk away: Villa Torlonia — the former residence of Mussolini, today a free public park with three museums, the Casino dei Principi and the Casino Nobile. The Nomentano quarter stretches beyond: local markets, trattorias with no tourist signs, the Rome that works.
